Context

Inequality, Exclusion and Poverty

  • Dramatically changing family and household dynamics plus absent parents:: approximately 45% of families in South Africa are headed by single parents, some families are child-headed and the community has been burdened by the effects of the migrant labour system.
  • Parents as role models: a high rate of parents in the community are illiterate, meaning there are very few who act as role models to the young people.
  • Food Insecurity: Stats SA has reported that 26.3% of households in Eastern Cape (19.9% national average) have run out of money to buy food or skipped a meal.
  • Spatial Underdevelopment: rural areas also bear the brunt of underdevelopment because of lack of proximity to urban centres where development is concentrated.

Unemployment

  • The community is riddled with a high rate of unemployment because the youth are not equipped to enter the job market, a high prevalence of crime and moral decay.

Education

  • Teachers: the community has an insufficient number of quality teachers.
  • Learners: learners are accomplishing very low pass rates, which can be attributed to little to no morale, lack of exposure, inadequate guidance and lack of information.
  • Dilapidated Infrastructure and Toilets: schools are poorly equipped and are not conducive to higher levels of teaching and learning.
