About Us

iKamvelihle means a brighter future in isiXhosa, a representation of what we as an organization aim to build for young people in Cala and surrounds. iKamvelihle Development Trust is a registered public benefit trust and non-profit organization aimed at developing the education system in and around Cala. We have a Board of Trustees who are committed to the mission of the organization, our trustees are equipped with expertise and appropriate skills that further the cause of the organization and act with integrity in all the undertakings of the organization.



Goals

Our goals as an organization are directed towards adding significant societal value by contributing to:

  • Successful and vibrant rural schools which are enriched by high quality of learning and teaching, improved governance and active parental participation in community schools.
  • Educationally empowered youth and young women who can make informed career and life choices.
  • Responsible and responsive professionals, alumni and partnership organizations.
  • Innovative and economically empowered rural communities that can discover new solutions to socio-economic challenges and contribute to better quality life for all.

Objectives

Our objectives, which are in line with our goals and mission are to:

  • Contribute towards improved culture of learning and teaching in identified ECD Centres, Primary and Senior Secondary schools
  • Empower students and educators to learn about study skills, exam preparation techniques, and ways to gain and apply knowledge
  • Promote awareness of learners about subject choices, post-school education and career choices
  • Support institutional and systems development in schools, parental involvement, teacher training and professionals to support education in a sustainable manner

  • Our mission is to help address the challenges of inequality as experienced by poor rural communities by being catalysts for change and inclusive human resource development.

Trustees

The Trustees of the iKamvelihle Development Trust are as follows:

Ms Viwe Mtshontshi

Ms Viwe Mtshontshi is an iKDT Trustee and holds a B.A. HED in Psychology and Sociology (University of Fort Hare), a B. Ed in Education and Development (Wits) and an M.A. in Human Resource Development (George Washington University, USA). She is currently the Chief of Party in South Africa of the School-Based Sexuality and HIV Prevention Activity at the Education Development Center (EDC), an international NGO. She has been in this role since 2015. This is a collaborative, cross-sectoral project between the education and the health sectors to reduce the high rate of teen pregnancy, prevent new HIV infections, and to provide care and support to students already infected with HIV. Prior to this she was Director of Public Private Partnerships at FHI 360 supporting nutrition and economic strengthening projects in the context of HIV-AIDS. She has also served as the Leadership Program Director of the Kellogg Southern Africa, a leadership initiative that developed young people from seven SADC countries to uplift their families from poverty.At AED, she was the Regional Director of Southern Africa and was responsible for the general oversight of the South Africa portfolio Her career started in education as a Maths, English Second Language and Career Guidance teacher in high school. Outside of the classroom, she got more involved in teacher-led initiatives that provided relevant professional development needs to teachers in a transforming South Africa. She became a co-founder of the Institute for Partnership between Education and Business (IPEB) where she facilitated collaborations between corporate sector and education. Upon completion of her studies, she worked at AED in the USA till she came to lead the regional office in South Africa in 2009 and currently the ECD’s Chief of Party.




Mr Siyabulela Tsengiwe

Mr Siyabulela Tsengiwe is an iKDT Trustee. He holds degrees in B Comm, BEd and Masters in Public & Development Management. He currently serves in the Ministry of Economic Development having completed his term of office as the Chief Commissioner of the International Trade Administration Commission of South Africa (ITAC) in 2017. He joined ITAC in 2002 and in 2005 became General Manager responsible for managing and coordinating ITAC’s core functions of Tariff Investigations, Trade Remedies, Import Control and Export Control. He has participated in bilateral, regional and multilateral trade negotiations in support of the Department of Trade and Industry. Before 2002 he served government in various capacities nationally and in the Eastern Cape province.




Ms Nohlanga Silwana

Ms Nohlanga Silwana is an admitted Attorney of the High Court of South Africa. She holds a Certificate in American and International Trade Law from the South Western Legal foundation in collaboration with Texas University as well as a Certificate in Corporate Governance from the University of Johannesburg. Nohlanga was a founding partner at Silwana Gqwede Attorneys specializing in Company secretarial services and statutory compliance, Establishment of business enterprise, Corporate Governance and Corporate Law since 2002. In 2005 she re-joined the Law Society of South Africa as a Director, heading and managing the Johannesburg School for Legal Practice.

She began her career in Corporate Governance in 2007 and has gained extensive experience in Corporate Governance, Legal, Compliance, Risk and Ethics Management. She has served in several leadership roles including serving as the Chairperson of the Standards Generating Body for Legal Training for the South African Qualifications Authority; a member of the Board of Trustees of the Black Lawyers Association Legal Education Centre; Director of the Bheki Mlangeni Foundation and currently a Trustee of Gauteng Fashion Council. Nohlanga is also currently the Executive Director of her 2 companies, NM Corporate governance and Legal services which specializes in corporate governance and legal advisory services; and Elegant dolls which is a clothing company.




Ms Tembela Kulu

Ms Tembela Kulu is an iKDT Trustee. She holds an Honours Degree in Business Administration (University of Cape Town). Currently, she is the Deputy Chief Operations Officer of the Thabo Mbeki Foundation. She is an outstanding executive with impeccable operational management experience. Previously, she served as an Executive Manager responsible for Commuter Rail for 10 years when she was coming from Heading Special Operations in the South African Police Service for 6 years. She started her career in Strategy Communication Management in different organisations where she functioned up to a General Management level. In 2015, Tembela received the 2015 Business Women of the Year (Public Sector) Award by Business Women Association of SA (BWASA). Tembela is a social and gender activist who champions the development of the youth and women empowerment.




Mr Mpilo Makiwane

Mpilo Makiwane holds a B.A Law degree from Durban Westville University, a Certificate in Community and Conflict Resolution from IMSSA, A Certificate in Minerals and Energy and a Certificate in Labour Relations from Wits University. Mpilo is a Human Resources professional specializing in Employee Relations with over 10 years’ experience in Human Resource Management. He has worked in different industries such as Pharmaceuticals, Health research and Mining. Mpilo is currently the Managing Director of MpiMak Consulting having also served as Human Resource Operations Specialist at Aurum Institute until 2014.

Mpilo began his career as a Project Researcher and Operations Co-Ordinator at the Institute for Democracy in South Africa (IDASA), from 1996 – 1998. He gained extensive experience in HR when he joined the International Health Care Distributors from 1999 as a Senior HR Officer. Mpilo continued to work in various industries and is now an Employee Relations Specialist. He is passionate about education and has been involved in a number of development initiatives such as the Sakhisizwe Development Forum.




Dr Lindiwe Msengana-Ndlela

Dr Lindiwe Msengana-Ndlela is the founder and chairperson of the iKDT Board of Trustees. She holds a PhD degree from Warwick University in the UK, a BEd and MBL from the School of Business Leadership at Unisa, a BCom and UED from Rhodes University. Since October 2013 she has held the position of Special Advisor and is currently Advisor to the Minister in the Department of International Relations and Coorperation (Dirco) in South Africa (previously in Ministry of Higher Education and Training; Ministry of Science and Technology). She is also an Adjunct Professor of Public Policy and Leadership at the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Nelson Mandela School of Governance. Before 1994, she was a research specialist at Rhodes University and joined the new South African public service thereafter, serving in senior management roles in departments such as Education, Trade and Industry. She has executive experience as an Accounting Officer in all three spheres of the South African public sector as national Director General (DG), provincial Head of Department and City Manager. Whilst at the helm of the National Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (previously Department of Provincial and Local Government, DPLG) as DG for seven years, she successfully managed a budget, which grew from R6 billion in 2002 to R32 billion by 2009, targeting mainly social infrastructure and basic services. All her Department’s Annual Reports to Parliament received positive audit opinions from the Auditor General. During this period, she also served in high-level technical committees in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region, the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) board and the Forum of South African Director Generals (FOSAD) Management Committee. In all her professional and community service roles, Dr Msengana-Ndlela has demonstrated a strong sense of humility, judgement, personal integrity and principled action.

Project Co-ordinator

Ms Zimkhitha Njadu (Nee Silwana)

Ms Zimkhitha Njadu is the Local Operations Coordinator of the iKDT. She holds a Bachelor Degree in Accounting Science and a Certificate in Basics of Business (UNISA), a Certificate in Management Principles (Varsity College) and a SARIPA Diploma in Insolvency Law and Practice (University of Pretoria). Parallel with her studies, Zimkhitha followed her passion of working with youth community members and became a youth leader where she developed her skills in youth and gender work. With her academic qualifications and passion for rural development she is committed to the co-ordination and execution of educational programmes in South Africa.
